Since 2017, I have been working on artworks that I call ‘lichtvilts’, or in English ‘lightfelts’. These works are both artworks and luminaires at the same time. They provide twilight, which can be an enchanting and captivating contribution to the atmosphere in a room.
As a lighting designer, it feels obvious for me to make light part of an artwork as the chosen artificial light determines how we will see and experience a work of art.
The themes that inspired me for these works are worldly things that "need" light to live; such as the flora and fauna but also lighting effects that occur in nature; sun, moon, stars and fire.
The materials wool, silk and light can be modelled to a certain extent, but they also often surprise me with unexpected effects. This makes it exciting, interesting and alive.
As you may can image, the light felts have a very different appearance with light than without light. This way, by adjusting the color and intensity of the light, you can change the artwork and thus the atmosphere of the room to your own wishes and preferences. I think it is important that people themselves can determine what atmosphere and feeling the work has to create. This makes these artworks unique and dynamic.
To give you an idea of what this looks like, you can go to a light felt on this website and use the slider to increase the light intensity. Normally, also different colors of light can be chosen, however on the website I have chosen the light color that I think is best suited.
